There are many definitions of a base in chemistry. Each definition depends on the field of chemistry for which the base is being defined. A base in chemistry is most often defined as a solution of water and a solute that can accept hydrogen ions. Bases are any of various water-soluble compounds capable of turning litmus blue that taste bitter and feel slippery. Bases include oxides and hydroxides of metals and ammonia. Metallic bases will react with an acid to form a metallic salt and water. When aqueous (water) solutions of an acid and a base are combined, a neutralization reaction takes place.
