Antonio López de Santa Anna (1794-1876, often Santa Ana) was a Mexican general and frequent President of Mexico in the mid-19th century. He is remembered for two major conflicts, the Battle of the Alamo (1836) during the Texas Revolution, and as a restored Mexican leader during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).

After being captured at the Battle of San Jacinto (1836), he was repatriated to Mexico where he fought against the French in the Pastry War (1838) and briefly attacked Texas (1842). After a dictatorial rule that raised the ire of the Mexican public, he was exiled to Cuba in 1845, only to return as President during the Mexican-American War. According to reports at the time, Santa Anna had agreed to negotiate an end to the conflict but was persuaded to fight, leading to the eventual US invasion of Mexico.
