After graduating from Columbia in 1983, he was hired by a Catholic-run charity in Chicago, Illinois, where he was a community organizer and advocate for the poor. He worked for five years and then went Harvard Law School, graduating with academic honors in 1991. He moved back to Chicago and worked as a civil rights attorney as well as teaching law for nearly twelve years at the University of Chicago Law School. He entered politics in 1996, serving three terms in the Illinois state senate, before becoming a U.S. Senator in 2004. He also married in 1992, and he wrote two best-selling books. In 2007, he launched his campaign for the presidency, and was elected in 2008.

He also taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School. He married Michelle Robinson (a fellow attorney and a businesswoman) in 1992, and they had two daughters. Mr. Obama decided to enter politics, and ran for office in 1996; he was elected to the Illinois state senate and began a political career, getting re-elected to the state senate twice before running for the U.S. senate and winning in 2004.
