Correction. Catherine was NOT married to Peter. Peter was the father of Czarina Elizabeth and Catherine was married to Fredrick , a minor German Prince. Both were brought to the Russian court by Elizabeth to create a family to inherit the throne.

She was married to her husband, Peter, who took the throne after the previous Empress had died, Empress Elizabeth. Peter wasn't a very good husband nor ruler, he created enemies with the military, church, and the government. Soon everyone want to overthrow him and make Catherine the regent, or temporary ruler. Then Catherine and her true lover, Gregory Orlov, rallied troops in St. Petersburg to support her and declare herself Catherine II, the sole ruler of Russia.
