He found goods, a new world, gold, and slaves.

Christopher Columbus learned about the sea, because he grew up in a major port city. He was fourteen years of age when he first sailed, mostly on trading routs, some as far as Iceland. He had an excellent education, resulting in his being able to speak several languages as an adult. In 1480, he married Filipa Moniz Perestrello, and they had a son named Diego together.

When Filipa's father died in 1457, he left papers and charts to Filipa and her mother. These where the documents that sparked Christopher's first interest in traveling across the Atlantic Ocean. He had also met a Spanish Captain that had sailed to the island where he lived. The Captain told him many interesting stories about where he was from and how he had gotten there. Before he died, the captain also gave Columbus the chart of where the route he had taken. After that, he went on some Portuguese voyages to Africa. By the year 1475, he had learned the art and theory of navigation.

It didn't too much. His cousin Leon may have been inspired, but communication wasn't like it is today and events would happen that people would either never hear about or find out about months later.
