Dian Fossey went to Africa to study the Mountain Gorilla. She came out in 1963 for a while, then came back to study the Gorilla's in 1966. Karisoke was the name she gave to the second and permanant research camp she built after having to move from the first camp in the Congo because of the fighting at that time. The name came from the two volcanic mountains, Karisimbi and Visoke, which were on either side. Dian studied the nature and food types of the Gorilla as well as their behaviour ways. She and her trackers would go out and destroy any traps and snares that they could find, on a regular basis. This was basically the start of her ANTI - POACHING campaign. The very first contact recorded by man of a 'wild' Gorilla touching a human, was when a Gorilla Dian had named "Peanut"streched out his hand and touched her. This was filmed by Bob Campbell as it happened. Dian became very attached to one Gorilla whom she named 'DIGIT', because of his one crooked finger. When 'DIGIT' was murdered by poachers, Dian became more determined with her ANTI - POACHING, and this unfortunetly made enemies for her. Dian however kept going, helping students who came to KARISOKE to study and help her with population counts and where abouts of the Gorilla's. Later, two of these,Sandy Harcourt and his wife Kelly(daughter of actor James Stewart) would try to hi-jack Karisoki from under her, but she managed to win that battle. Dian started the DIGIT FUND, and while in the beginning funds were taken from this for other projects without her Knowledge at first,(also by two culprits already mentioned, Sandy and Kelly), she eventually got things moving for the anti poaching for which it was intended. Dian Fossey was brutely murdered on the 26th December 1985. A Great, Great loss for all conservation. Dian Fossey showed us the way to appreciate and look after what we have. To understand the value and what we can learn from nature. What Dian Fossey has done, is build an empire of knowledge and a centre in Rwanda that deserves all credit to her. Well Done DIAN FOSSEY.
