Prior to Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a Non-Aggression Pact that formally decided upon several agreements between the two previously hostile nations. For one thing, it laid out a partition of Poland, contingent upon a successful invasion by German forces (which would be complemented by Soviet forces after certain conditions were met). For another thing, it delineated zones of influence throughout Eastern Europe for each power. It also included various economic trade-agreements.

The secret clause in the treaty spelled out how the Soviets should take over the eastern half of Poland as Germany attacked the Poles from the west.

Poland had close trading ties with Russia and Hitler believed that if he were to invad Poland then the soviets would launch an attack. But when he eventually did the USSR did not violate the pact. And Hitler compensated by having small things like vehicles and the like

Germany & the USSR signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact by which they agreed to divide Europe between themselves. Of course, Hitler eventually violated the pact, greedy person that he was. That was the mistake that cost him the war.

The Molotov-Ribbentrop pact signed by Nazi Germany and the USSR agreed that the two nations would not attack eachother, and would divide Europe between them, with Germany taking the western half and the USSR taking the eastern half. Had Nazi Germany not violated this pact, it is likely that the outcome of WW II would have been different.

The Germany & USSR Non-Aggression Pact, also known as the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. It was signed in Moscow on August 23, 1939, by the Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov and the German foreign minister Joachim von Ribbentrop. It contained secret terms that divide up the independent countries of Poland, Finland & the Baltic States. Also Romania would be forced to give-up territory to the Soviet Union, and be in its 'sphere of interest'.

Germany will take most of Poland; USSR is to be given control of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and some of Poland.
