Hans Christian Oersted (1777-1851) forever changed the way scientists think about electricity and magnetism. While preparing to perform an experiment during a lecture, he found that the magnetized needle of a compass was deflected when the electric current through a voltaic pile was started or stopped. This surprising occurrence was evidence that electricity and magnetism are related phenomena. He also discovered piperine, the pungent component that causes the hotness of pepper, and his 1825 formulation of metallic aluminum is considered a significant contributions in the history of chemistry.

The study of electromagnetism was influenced greatly by scientists such as Faraday and Orsted. Faraday did many experiments on the effects of electricity and magnetism that were studied by future scientists.

What is the difference between electromagnetism and magnetism?

Magnetism is inclusive of electromagnetism. There is no difference. One can include curent flow, and one requires current flow.
