"I" stance for Ellah or Illah the Arabic word for Allah (GOD) "sh" it means hear. I am not a linguist but I have studied Arabic, Persian and English. The meaning of the name Ishmael means God hear. Apparently this was for the crying of Ibrahim asking God to give him a son. This name was chosen by God.

A:In the Book of Genesis, Ishmael was the eldest son of the patriarch Abraham, and half-brother to Isaac. According to this tradition, Ishmael was the father of the 'Ishmaelites', or Arabs. Islam has accepted this view, although there is no evidence that the pre-Islamic Arabs saw themselves as descended from Ishmael or Abraham.

An early Jewish view of the supposed descendants of Ishmael is shown in Midrash Esther Rabbah: "Of ten portions of stupidity in the world, nine were given to the Ishmaelites and one to the rest of the world. In the same manner, nine portions of robustness were allocated to the Ishmaelites and one to the rest of the world."

It depends on the context. If you mean "Call me, Ishmael" as in that you wish for an Ishmael to call you (usually by phone), the translation would be: Attasel bi, Esma3il (أتصل بي إسماعيل) If you are referring to the first line of Moby Dick, where the verb "to call" is used to to mean "to be named".
