He retired to his estate of Montpelier. He had trouble making enough money to cover the gambling debts of his adopted son. John Payne Todd. He served on the board and as rector of the University of VA. He repudiated the movements of nullification and secession that had arisen in VA and elsewhere. He helped found the American Colonial Society which a few years later started Liberia. He died at home 19 years after he retired.

He retired and died June 28, 1836. Here is an interesting thought. The day he died he was the last of the founding fathers who had been involved in the constitutional convention. That means from that day to today there was no one left to ask questions and why something was written the way it was or left out. We had to guess from that point.
