Jesus did't say 'us', he said 'I' am the light of the world. He meant he is the truth and no one can get to the father ('father' being in the holy trinity) but through him.

___

He did say that, but it also says in Matthew 5:14 "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid."

He meant that we need to be good examples to other people in this world.

Answer:

The Bible calls the ways of this world the ways of "darkness." These ways are the ways of evil, selfishness, hatred, lust, envy, greed, jealousy... the ways of the "god of this world, Satan the Devil"... the god whom our first parents chose for their children to worship and obey in the Garden of Eden, by being the first humans to do so.

The ways of the True God and Creator of man, however, are the ways of "light" -- the ways of selfless love and outgoing concern for the well-being of others... the way that's contrary to "selfish human nature."

Jesus Christ says to us: "...I AM THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the Light of Life." (John 8:12)

One reason Jesus came was to reveal God's Truth [the Bible - John 17:17]; His LIGHT... to the "Children of Light." That is... those whom His Father is calling now to become the first generation of His Children. He describes the character traits of God's Children in what men call the "Beatitudes" of Matthew 5 [which is actually chapters 5-7, since Jesus spoke the whole thing there in one sitting on the mountain].

"Ye are the Light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are there in the house.

"LET YOUR LIGHT SO SHINE BEFORE MEN, that they may see your good works [the righteous, selfless, loving works of God], and glorify your Father which is in heaven." (Matt.5:14-16)

In these "last days" of man's rule on earth... Jesus Christ's Word is published, the single-most popular bestselling book year after year, and it's readily available to all the nations of the world... who care to read it.

The "Light" of God's Word is the "TRUTH" that Jesus came to "bring to Light" in the minds and hearts of those with the "eyes to see and the ears to hear."

It's a "Light" that the "children of darkness" of this world don't want to hear.

"...this is the condemnation, that LIGHT is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than Light, because their deeds [works] were evil. For every one that doeth evil HATETH THE LIGHT, neither cometh to the Light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

"But he that doeth Truth cometh to the Light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God." (John 3:19-21)

Jesus Christ brought Spiritual Understanding [LIGHT] of the Word of God to the minds and hearts of the "called-out-ones" [ekklesia, the 'elect,' predestined] of His Father.

"Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures." (Luke 24:45)

Jesus Christ is the Light of God's Truth, the Bible, to those whom He is calling.
