President John F. Kennedy commanded a US Navy patrol torpedo boat (PT Boat) in the Pacific Ocean during WWII. The ship was rammed and split in two by a Japanese destroyer. Although two USA sailors were killed, President Kennedy saved the rest of his crew and was honored for his actions.
