He controlled and knew how to help and compromise his people and society!

You're overlooking his failures of his presidency and afterwards, which is a very contraversial topic. He was mostly kept from doing great things because of a deturrent of: The Panic of 1837

Martin Van Buren closely followed the policies set by his predecessor, Andrew Jackson. Unfortunately, adhering to the Jackson policy of decentralized banks led to the Panic of 1837, followed by five years of economic depression. He favored lower tariffs, free trade and set up the national bond policy for national debt.

Key events of Van Buren administation.

  • Panic of 1837. VanBuren blamed the bank for making unsound loans. Pushed through the Independent Treasury Act which established sub-treasuries to hold federal funds instead of putting them into bank.
  • Caroline Affair. Faced with rebellion in Canada and US sympathy for it, the British seized the USS Caroline in US waters and destroyed it, killing one American. Van Buren protested but did ask for retaliation.
  • Aroostook War. Dispute over the border betwen Maine and New Brunswick. After some saber-rattling, Van Buren settled the matter peacefully.
  • Texas question - Texas asked for statehood in 1836. VanBuren opposed it, fearing it would stir up debate about slavery and balance between slave and free states.
  • Second Seminole War continued - provoked by Jackson's Indian removal policy which Van Buren continued.

In 1844, he was a contender for the Democratic nomination that eventualy went to Polk. He ran for President in 1848 on the Free Soil ticket and won enough votes in New York to tip the state to the Zachary Taylor and theWhigs. He then retired to his estate of Lindenwald and began his memoirs which he never completed and worked in his garden. He also made a tour of Europe and was received by royalty.
