Millard Fillmore became president upon the sudden death of Zachary Taylor.

  • Fillmore supported the Compromise of 1850. Compromises never please everyone, but the clause that set stiff penalties for helping runaway slaves escape was strongly opposed by the abolitionist section of the Whig party, so this support no doubt kept Fillmore from being nominated for a second term.
  • Fillmore sent Commodore Matthew Perry to open up trade with Japan
  • California was admitted as a state.
