Hayes did not seek re-election and happily retired to his estate , Spiegel Grove, in Fremont, Ohio. He loyally supported Republican candidates for office and let his views be known from time to time. He supported education and served on the board of trustees for Ohio University and other colleges in Ohio. He died after a little less than 12 years of retirement.

He was a lawyer before he held any public office, and he also fought in the Army in the Civil War. Before he was president, he was the governor of Ohio.
