Saint Cecilia (Latin: Sancta Caecilia) is the patron saint of musicians and Church music because as she was dying she sang to God. St. Cecilia was an only child. Her feast day is celebrated in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic Churches on November 22. She is one of seven women, excluding the Blessed Virgin, commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass. It was long supposed that she was a noble lady of Rome who, with her husband Valerian, his brother Tiburtius, and a Roman soldier Maximus, suffered martyrdom, c. 230, under the Emperor Alexander Severus.

History has recorded the birth dates of very few persons who lived during the second and third centuries. Such is the case with the Roman martyr Cecilia about whom we have very little reliable evidence other than the inscription of her name on a catacomb. Based on the catacomb's age, it is believed that she died and was buried there sometime between the end of the second century and the middle of the third. Her feast day is celebrated in both the Greek and Latin Church on November 22.
There is disagreement among historians as to the century when Cecilia was born and died so no meaningful answer is possible.

Cecilia was a beautiful young lady and of a noble Roman family. She was married to a pagan who she converted to Christianity. Even though she was married she remained a virgin and her husband joined her in her ministry to the needy.

Cecilia was not a 'religious' in terms of being a nun. She lived her life as a Christian in the manner we are all called upon by Christ to live. She fed the hungry, gave drink to the thirsty, shelter to the homeless, clothing to the naked and buried the dead. She had the calling from her earliest years to live a life in the manner we are called by Our Lord to live. In the end she gave her life for her beliefs.

During the early Roman persecutions she was martyred for her faith but not before she distributed her wealth to the poor and converted her pagan husband to Christianity.
