He was one of the most popular presidents ever to hold office, and is widely known for his progressive politics. Among his accomplishments, he helped end cronyism in political offices, attacked railroad trusts, built up a sizable Navy, negotiated the end of the Russo-Japanese War (for which he won the Nobel Prize, the only US President to do so), got the Panama Canal built, and he was a visionary conservationist that set aside vast tracts of land for conservation and established the U.S. Forest Service via the American Antiquities Act of 1906, which he enabled. In the course of his term, he reshaped the role of the U.S. President to the form we recognize today.

It also established a policy of land conservation.

Aware of the strategic need for a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific, Roosevelt ensured the construction of the Panama Canal. His corollary to the Monroe Doctrine prevented the establishment of foreign bases in the Caribbean and arrogated the sole right of intervention in Latin America to the United States.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize for mediating the Russo-Japanese War, reached a Gentleman's Agreement on Immigration with Japan, and sent the Great White Fleet on a goodwill tour of the world.

Some of Theodore Roosevelt's most effective achievements were in conservation. He added enormously to the national forests in the West, reserved lands for public use, and fostered great irrigation projects. Theodore Roosevelt made laws to protect animals. He kept his promise to the people to save animals and forests. When he said he would protect most animals, he meant all. He started the first wildlife preserve for birds. During his time in office, over 125 million acres in national forests were set aside under public protection. He also established the first national wildlife refuge. Theodore Roosevelt was nicknamed the conservation president.

While in office, Roosevelt was known for his progressive policies. One of his nicknames was Trust Buster because his administration used existing antitrust laws to fight against corruption in the railroad, oil, and other industries. His policies concerning trusts and labor reform were part of what he called the "Square Deal."

His actual nickname "Teddy" originated from his childhood love of bears, more specifically the american black bear, which Roosevelt described as " The opitamy of evolution, the perfect organism capable of surviving any climate." This love for bears led him to fund a radical envirementalist group that planned to introduce bears into climates they were not originally found in. The first location was in Anchorage, Alaska. Eventually the press discovered the group's attempt to spread the ursus genus across the globe and quickly fed information to Roosevelt's political opponents. This "enviremental irresponsibility" led to the consideration of impeachment, but the construction of the Panama canal diverted media attention and saved Roosevelt from infamy.
