The 1850s was very different than today's classrooms. ALL grades and ALL ages shared ONE classroom, often called "One Room Schoolhouses". That means teachers pre-1900 had to know the subject matter from first to at least 8th grades. Most teachers were also Lawyers, Doctors, or Farmers, so they knew a wide range of subjects. Two or three students shared one book and one handheld chalk board (called a Slate).


After calling students inside with a bell (handheld usually, or if the church was used as a school they rang the church bell). Then, classes might be questioned about yesterday's work, or taught new material. Often, students worked in 1s or 2s on different subjects, while the teacher taught
