In ancient Egypt the King usually led the army into battle. In Egypt the soldiers were the ones that usually became Kings after serving for a long hard time. During a campaign Egyptians would force young men to join the army. During the new kingdom new soldiers were put through hard discipline as soon as they were settled in their camp. The training that the soldiers had to do was very tough, they needed to do constant physical exercise, Wrestling and weapon training every day
I'm not exactly sure, but I think that their job was to protect their kingdom, or whatever they called their kingdom then, but yes I think that they protected the kingdom.
