Spanish. It is a fallacy that he was Italian because it is known he spoke Spanish, wrote in Spanish and was married to a Spanish nobel woman. Historians now think that his was from a noble Spanish family ( one reason he would be able to do all the above) who were political rivals of the court so he changed his name to Columbus to gain the crown's support.
Yes, he kept a diary of his thoughts and travels. He wrote in Spanish and today these are located in Madrid. He wrote on Friday, Oct 12, 1492 " In order that they (the Tainos) might feel great amity towards us, because I knew they were a people to be delivered and converted to our holy Faith rather by love than by force. I gave to some among them some red caps and glass beads which they hung round their necks, and many things of little value. At this they were greatly pleased and became so entirely our friends that it was a wonder to see. They all go naked as their mothers bore them.......they do not bear arms or know them for I showed to them swords and took them by the blade and cut themselves through ignorance. They have no iron. Their spears are certain reeds, without iron, and some of these have a fish tooth at the end while others are pointed in various ways." This is an example of the things he wrote in his ship log and it is because of these pages we know so much about his trip in 1492.

Christopher Columbus was the author of a book called 'la aventura de América'. This book has never been published. Only one known copy in existence(the original hand written copy) and it is hidden in the Vatican library. The exact reason the Vatican has kept this book from reaching the public is unknown.
Christopher Columbus.
