James Prescott Joule was an English physicist and brewer, born in Salford, Lancashire. During the 19th century, Joule studied the nature of heat, and discovered its relationship to mechanical work. This led to the theory of conservation of energy, which led to the development of the first law of thermodynamics. The unit of energy, the joule, is named after him.
A Joule is: One watt/second,
0.8 calories, or
0.00134 horsepower/seconds.
The significance of Mr Joule's brewery interest is that beer brewing requires accurate temperature control, and a brewer has accurate thermometers.
