To relive the discouragement and despair that was felt during the 1920's and 1930's, people would attend social activities such as Church functions, Soda Fountains, and local dances. Many people also found comfort reading The Bible.

An old maxim attributed variously to both shaker and quaker, was " use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without". my father said his grandmother, neither quaker nor shaker, taught him that. Because he was able to, he learned to repair what he could, and to make or modify what he couldnt find or afford, (and not to expect it to perform as per the genuine original!). Many people would trade skills; i will sharpen your mower if you will patch my old tire, i will split some wood if you will take these rags and make me a quilt. My mother would make quilts, pies, casserolees, skirts, dresses, her potato salads always finished faster than anybody elses. My father was good at bagging (nongame) birds for pies and stews, we still have his old .22. It was known my greatgranmother would take in hoboes, who kept the old bunkhouse free of bums, she would boil their castoff suits and they would shrink enough dad always had a decent suit or 3 as he grew up. He learned to picked up every stray nut and bolt and screw he came across, sort and match them, and straighten nails, and could sharpen anything

What was the best jobs during the Great Depression?

The best jobs during the great depression were based on necessity, not want. For instance, jobs that rely on things we need, such as food, water, health, oil, and transportation will be safe. On the other hand, jobs that derive from want, such as clothes, will not prosper during tough economic times. In addition, many jobs in the banking industry will suffer as the tough economy cannot give banks the necessary cash flow to sustain themselves.

How did credit cause problems for people in the 1920's?

Credit was a major cause of the Great Depression. In the 1920's, people in America (e.g. Canada and the USA) had a great economy due to the war and therefore people were more willing to spend money. Many people though, didn't make a lot of money and so they bought things using credit. People that should not have been able to afford things like houses and cars suddenly had them. Banks were willing to loan money because of the great state of the economy, and people were happy to take them. To make matters even worse, people noticed that the Stock Market was the best way to get rich off of other people's money. In other words, working people would take a loan from a bank and invest it in the market. Before September of 1929, they were basically guaranteed to make money. They would then pay off the loan and have a small profit to show. But when the stock market crashed, people lost billions of dollars. They didn't even use their money in the first place, and so now they had to pay off a large loan with money they didn't have. Banks, of course, began to foreclose homes and reposes things. For some banks, though, they couldn't collect because the people had nothing, and so the people and banks went bankrupt. To summerize, credit was a major cause of the Great Depression.
