As a child he belonged to a fairly poor family. He studied law at whitier college and returned home to practice law with a law firm. Married and moved to Washington where he worked for the government for a while. He spent the war in the US Navy in various post in the south pacific.

Following the war he became a congressman and moved to Washington. He made a lot of millage out of the Communist witch hunt during the McCarthy era. after which he became a senator and Eisenhower's running mate in 1952 and became vice president. After that he returned to practicing law in his home town until he was once again nominated and won an election that made him president.
