How was Copernicus' model of the universe different from Ptolemy's model?

The main difference was that Ptolemy's model was geocentric (Earth-centred) and Copernicus's was heliocentric (Sun-centred). Ptolemy's model came from ancient times while Copernicus's was much later (1543). Both models represented the planets' orbits by using combinations of circles and epicycles to explain the way the planets move among the stars. Copernicus found that the orbits of the inner planets could be explained more simply. That is to say that the epicycles used for all the orbits were smaller, and for the inner planets a lot smaller. Both models represented the planets' positions with reasonable accuracy given the crude observational methods used in those days. Until gravity and the laws of dynamics were discovered about 150 years after the publication of Copernicus's system, there was no way of deciding which model was the 'right' one.

How many planets give life?

Scientists are still bringing stuff back to earth from other planets to look at but, from the information we have now we say that only 1 planet has life. That planet is Earth.

Why did God create life on other planets besides earth?

Scientists say that life can be expected to have evolved on other planets, wherever the environment is not so hostile that life can not be supported. They say that in this vast universe there must be many such planets that can support life and that some are likely to support intelligent life forms even more advanced than humans. Whether we believe that our God created the life on other planets is a matter of human faith. No doubt any intelligent life on other planets will never have heard of Earth's gods.

What makes the earth unique when compared to other planets?

I can't say there is much that makes Earth special or unique. Earth may harbor life now, but other planets have done so before as well. There is a universe full of planets and potential life. There may possibly be 1 million other Earths out there, much like our own. But if you just want to compare the Earth to the solar system, you could say that it currently has intelligent life, even though there may be life on mars.

What did the geocentric theory say?

It said that the Earth was in the center and the Sun, Moon, and other planets revolved around it. But this theory was wrong.

Will all of the planets collide at one point?

(well in pics) but it really wont happen because earth is like a big magnet but the gravitational pull will not let the other planets collide with the earth or (even the sun) some say !!

What did ptolmey say about the solar system?

Ptolemy sought to explain planetary movements by stating that every planet in the solar system revolved around the sun. Astronomers began to question this explanation when they realized that planets often appeared to be moving backwards relative to Earth.

Why do you say the earth is a small planet?

Because it's small compared to other planets in the solar system, for example Jupiter is quite a bit bigger than earth but earth isn't small.

Which scientist made highly accurate measurements that disproved the theories of ptolemy and Copernicus?

Tycho Brahe designed new equipment to measure planets' positions with unprecedented accuracy. Tycho's observations of the planets' orbits led to his alternative model which still had the Earth at the centre with the Sun orbiting it, but with the five other known planets orbiting the Sun. But Tycho's measurements were used by his assistant Kepler to produce an entirely new theory in 1609 with the planets in elliptical orbits, all orbiting the Sun as in Copernicus's model of 1543. Kepler's theory is still used today. It's important to remember that the theories of Ptolemy and Copernicus are not 'wrong', it would be better to say they are not as accurate as Kepler's theory. As models, all three of them predict the planets' positions fairly accurately.

The earth and all the planets does what around the sun?

Circle around the sun some say the sun circles the planets but it does not

Is there a planet that has oxygen other than Earth?

Probably. Small amounts of oxygen has already been detected on other planets (and moons) within our solar system, including:Saturn's moon RheaJupiter's moons Europa and GanymedeMars (0.13% of the atmosphere)

What did Ptolemy say about the sun?

he thought it went around in a line and back to the earth...
