House or domestic slaves were charged with activities involved in the running of the masterâ??s home. Duties included caring for children, cooking, cleaning and serving. House slaves in the United States were particularly treated inhumanely, as the master had total dominion over the bodies of slave women, resistance making them eligible for death or punishment via the Black Codes. In some cases, slave women, usually house servants, were deliberately raped by slave owners to produce children who would bear the status of their mothers and become one of the masterâ??s slaves.

Answer

Slaves did all the work on the plantation, which is similar to a farm but much larger. A plantation could contain hundreds or even a thousand acres, with the "main" house (owner's residence), barns, many outbuildings, fields for growing crops, orchards, and buildings for processing the crops and to house work animals and tools.

Duties within the house might include cooking, cleaning, keeping the fires lit and the fireplaces and stoves cleaned, babysitting, sewing, household repairs, midwifery, and whatever else it took to run the household.

Outside the home, slaves did all the upkeep on the house and property, all the farming duties, building any structures required, keeping up their own quarters, growing their own fruits and vegetables for their own consumption, and overseeing the work of other slaves, including disciplining if necessary.

Slaves could also be assigned to work off the plantation. They might be loaned or rented to other plantation owners or local businesses for labor. The money paid for these loan outs was kept by the slave owners. Sometimes "trades" lasted for years, with the slave separated from his or her family.

Answer

Since slaves were chattel (property), owners could do with them as they pleased. Most slave owners had one or more female slaves for "sexual service" and the children born from such union became additional property to sell, trade, or...at maturity, to use as sexual service also.

Since Africans usually only had first names, and were forced to take an "Americanized" first name and often Biblical first names, most slaves only had a first name assigned to them-- they had no last names. This makes it difficult to identify slaves and their genealogies in historical documents, such as the U.S. Census. Sometimes, the owner "gave" the slaves his last name, but typically these "possessions" were only called by whatever the owner wanted. Often slaves were "passed" to another family member through a Last Will and Testament made before the owner died; other times, they were auctioned off with the Estate sale of a deceased owner.
They were mainly used as free labor. Women were used sometimes as house slaves, but mainly worked alongside men in fields. On sugar and cotton plantations, slaves would pick them and do all the labor.

Slaves could also be captured enemy soldiers of any nation, especially in the ancient world, when slavery was extremely common.
