The G.I. Bill (officially titled the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, PL345) provided for college or vocational education for returning World War II veterans (commonly referred to as GIs or G.I.s) as well as one year of unemployment compensation. It also provided loans for returning veterans to buy homes and start businesses. :0 :) :( :\

Of the various perks of the GI Bill, most paled in comparison to the really big one: It paid college tuition. This is where the postwar generation of teachers, engineers, chemists, architects, doctors, etc. came from. Very few pieces of legislation passed by Congress have ever paid off so handsomely for the country as a whole as the G. I. Bill has.
