The Missouri Compromise of 1820 brought Missouri into the Union as a slave state and Maine as a free state.

The Missouri Compromise kept the balance of free and slave states from 1820 to 1850.

This policy increased productivity in the U.S. economy by allowing the free labor of slavery in Missouri. This increased the supply of goods and services for the nation from the midwestern region.
