Every tribe was different and each had a different term in their own language for the Mississippi.

The Pawnee name was Kickaátit. The Cheyenne called it the "Big Greasy River" (Máʼxe-éʼometaaʼe) which sounds less than attractive. The Arapaho called it Beesniicíe. Among the Ojibwe/Chippewa people different sections of the river have different names - one of these is Gichi-ziibi. The Mohawk name was Yandawezue, meaning great river.

It is alleged that the Choctaws called it Misha sipokni - meaning "beyond age", but this is not confirmed.
