Nothing. During the time of the Roman Empire, there was no such place as Israel. The kingdom of Israel had long been dissolved and the present day country was far in the future. The area was called Judea and it initially was a client kingdom of Rome. Rome then annexed it into the province of Syria before eventually making it a province called Judea. After the first Jewish revolt the temple was destroyed and much of the population enslaved, but the Jews were allowed to remain there. After the second Jewish revolt the city of Jerusalem was forbidden to the Jews, the Jews themselves were forced from their lands and city and scattered all over the empire and the province was renamed Palistina.
