Most of the men in the Home Guard had full time jobs and trained in the evenings. As well as preparing themselves to be ready to fight off a German invasion, the Home Guard also guarded buildings that had been bombed to prevent looting, helped to clear bomb damage, helped to rescue those trapped after an air raid, guarded factories and airfields, captured German airmen that had been shot down and set up roadblocks to check people's identity cards. At night they patrolled fields in which the enemy gliders or paratroops might land. No one expected them to beat well-trained German soldiers. Their job was to slow them down until the army arrived.
Answer
That was a British term for the military units that defended the country from a German invasion.
they were civilians that trained with the army and protected their neighbourhood, from German invasion during WW2. once the air raid warning signal had been sounded, they would go around all of the houses to make sure all lights were out and all windows were boarded up.
the home guard was a British reserve establishment consisting mainly of men who were too old for regular military service. The units were organized locally so that their training could be done without taking the men away from their homes and towns. initially they were to be Britain's last line of defence in the event of invasion, defending each village and town as the Germans approached and acting as guerillas in occupied territory. Since that never happened they spent much of the war just training. I think that in June of 1944 they provided security around the camps and ports from which the Normandy invasion force was launched. I remember Churchill saying something in his memoirs about their being glad to finally have a real mission after just training for so long. Michael Montagne

They were volenteers who were deemed too unfit or too younge to be drafted as first line soldiers and responsible for defending key points and putting up resistance long enough for regualar troops to react in case of invasion.
