A typical Viking ship looked somewhat similar to a modern day canoe. The longships were used for exploration, trade and warfare. They were long, narrow boats with shallow hull's that were designed for speed.

The Viking long ships were made of wood, and didn't go far under water. Their bottom were relatively flat, so they could sail almost anywhere, up rivers, onto beaches etc. They usually had a single, striped full sail, and "oar ports"- (holes on the side of the ships so the oars could go through). Most pictures and stories have the ships with shields hanging or attached over the side. This would probably not be true, as they were used for protection and wouldn't want to risk them falling overboard. They all had a head of a dragon or snake on the bow of the ship, to scare enemies away. Imagine you are gathering water at a river, and it's very foggy, you can't see much. Suddenly a dragon's head emerges from the mist, followed by another one, and another one! There is the sound of fierce war cries in the air, along with splashing and metal swords being unsheathed. You have been invaded by a viking army. That "surprise" was often very effective.

The Viking Warships were narrow, long, and shallower. The ships had to be narrow to sail in rivers, and shallow so that warriors could easily jump out for battle.
