The Vikings named Iceland, Iceland. They wanted the island for themselves and wanted to discourage others from settling there. They named Greenland, Greenland for the opposite reason. They wanted to sell farms on that cold frozen piece of ice filled land. They thought that by calling that place Greenland they could sell farms. They were right. The same idea was used in Florida when salesmen sold swamp land by calling it rolling hills.
