Radio would have no value to us if it couldn't be used to carry information. Without
information added to it, the only thing you can tell about a radio wave is whether
or not it's there. The first, and simplest, way to add information to radio waves is
to turn them on and off according to certain patterns. At the receiving location,
the patterns of 'there' and 'not there' are used to spell text messages. The system
is called "Morse Code".
'There' and 'not there' is a very effective and efficient way to carry information by
radio. It's spectrum efficient and relatively immune to noise. But it's slow. There's
no practical way to use 'there' and 'not there' to carry a voice, let alone music, a
TV picture, or data at hundreds of megabits per second. New, faster methods of
adding information to radio had to be developed.

Am signal but no FM signalAM and FM signals use different antennas to receive the frequencies they use. If you are receiving an AM signal (if you can tune in to an AM radio station), but you can't receive an FM signal (you cannot tune into an FM radio station), then the most likely cause of your problem is that your FM antenna is broken. This is assuming that you get only static while on the FM setting on the radio. If you get nothing, meaning no sound at all, then there is most likely a mechanical or electrical problem with the insides of the radio. (the FM button is broken, the chipset is blown...or a number of other electrical problems)
