The Beta is sort of like a second-in-command or a deputy. There is rarely two betas, often it is just one Beta. The Beta has the job of keeping the pack in order while the Alphas aren't around. When the Alphas return, they are no longer able to order around the pack. Hope this helped! ~Shadow Wolf

Gamma isn't officially a rank. Theres Alpha, Beta, and Omega, then the other wolves without a rank/title that make up the rest of the pack. I believe the Gamma is kind of like the Betas, though. They are the advisors for the Alphas and Betas, enforcing their rules/dominance and putting wolves in their place.

beta wolves are just like others. they eat, howl, growl, sleep, protect, catch food. the only difference is the beta wolves are more fierce. they catch food by themselves but they still live in the pack. they catch food when no on is looking so the other wolves wont try to eat their food. so even though they live in a pack they are still loners.

What does a Beta do in a wolfpack?

The beta wolf is the top challenger for the alpha position, hence his roll within a pack is to keep the alpha wolf on top of his game, or to become the alpha, himself. Vying challenges are seldom lethal or even injurious, so a beta victory usually means the alpha and beta simply swap places in the hierarchy. Since the alpha wolf retains the right to breed, the beta is quite motivated.
