Chanukah is the holiday which usually falls in December. You must remember that Jewish people go by a different calendar. Christmas always falls on December 25th because Christians follow a solar calendar. Jewish people follow the lunar calendar so the day changes from a Christians point of view, but it is always on the same day in the Jewish calendar.

December 25th has no particular significance in Judaism. So, the way it works out, there are several possibilities for different Jews in different situations within our predominantly Christian American society:

If it's a Saturday, then ...

-- Nothing about it is any different in any way from any other Saturday, with the possible exception that there's sure to be less traffic to Dodge when I walk across the busy street on the way to the synagogue.

If it's a weekday, then ...

-- I can celebrate and sleep late because the regular morning service at the synagogue will start at 8:00 instead of 6:15 because nobody has to go to work today.

-- I can celebrate because I'm working in somebody else's place today, so that they can be home with their family for Christmas, and I can bank a day off that I can use when I need it for MY holiday.

-- I can celebrate and sleep late because the office is closed and I don't have to go to work today.

There are also some years where December 25th happens to be one of the eight days of Hanukkah and features celebration accordingly. However, these celebrations are no different than the ones on any other night of Hanukkah nor are in anyway connected to Christmas or Christmas ritual.

Jews have no holidays tied to months on the Gregorian calendar. Jews use the Hebrew calendar, which does not line up evenly with the Gregorian calendar.

The following Jewish holidays sometimes occur in December:

  • Rosh Hodesh Heshvan
  • Rosh Hodesh Kislev
  • Hanukkah
  • the 10th of Tevet
  • 4 or 5 Shabbats usually fall in December
