ANSWER: The Director has become seen as the artistic force behind a movie post 1950's, before that a director was a hired gun completely under the producers control. All directors are different and all of them take control of different parts of the job. Today, most directors work primarily with actors, cinematographers, and the script. They then give their orders (or do not give them) to the AD (assistant director). The Assistant directors primary job is to adapt to the weakness of their director and compensate to make sure that the picture gets made. Additionally, if the "Producer" is the big name behind the movie, then you can expect that the producer has all of the control. If the director is a name him or herself, then their main goal is to make sure that the narrative is told properly (*properly as of their opinion).

Remember: MOVIES ARE STORIES and the people behind the movies (from the extras, actors, crew, and suits) are all their for the process of storytelling.

It just so happens that storytelling can be a very lucrative business...

Movies are a director's medium, so everything that happens on a movie set involves the director -- somehow.

Potentially, the producers have decided on the budget and are indeed responsible for paying the bills incurred making a film, but the director is the leader of a set.

In addition, a director may attend auditions, choose other crew members for camera work. lighting and so forth pre-production.

Post-production, a director puts together the film based on the media available after the filming step is finished.
