It is called a symbiotic relationship. These are very important in evolution.

A lichen is made up of fungus cells for support and algae cells which fix carbon via photosynthesis. The algae and fungi species that make up a give lichen species are only found as lichen, they don't live on their own.

This is a very tight symbiosis. An even tighter one can be seen in every eukaryotic cell. Mitochondria and chloroplasts are the result of a symbiotic relationship between prokaryotes(bacteria) and a eukaryotic ancestor cells. Mitochondria and chloroplasts have bacterial DNA, and the sequence is similar to some modern bacteria.

i believe one symbiotic relationship in antarctica is the lichen and fungi. Its hard to believe there are plants there but there are. The fungi is the lichen's photosynthetic partner, meaning it provides the lichen with sunlight. i believe one symbiotic relationship in antarctica is the lichen and fungi.
