Maritime refers to the sea, and more specifically to seafaring (ships and boats).

It is used in geographic and climate descriptions.

The general term "marine" refers more broadly to the sea (the oceans) and may be synonymous.

Maritime is a naval term, however it does not necessarily refer to the Navy or military. Maritime refers to activities that are done at sea. Therefore, when a person is taking a cruise, that is also considered a maritime activity.
