GREEN: represents the earth, hills, trees, and mountains. PURPLE: generally used in the recessed portions of the totem, as for symbols it represents a reverent nature. BLACK: as a rule it stood for power.

Historically, colours used on totem poles were fairly limited due to native pigments being used. They were often the sacred colours: black, red and white. The link below takes you to a photograph of a traditional totem pole using these colours.

In more modern times the native tribes have access to a much wider range of colours from the local hardware store, so modern poles have gaudy and not-so-traditional colours.
