Brightens thing up on the tree

Answer:

The lights on a Christmas tree represent the Light of Life coming into our darkened world. This is understood in several slightly different ways:

1. They represent Jesus Christ, called "the Light of the World," whose birth is celebrated at Christmas.

2. They represent the Light of God, which can be understood as Truth or as the Gospel of Salvation, or simply as light revealing the Way.

3. They represent the beauty of the stars in the dark winter sky, which in turn symbolize God's Creative power and presence.

The fact that red lights are pretty.

There are a lot of bogus stories circulating this time of year relating to various Christmas customs and saying that something is somehow "symbolic". That's a nice thought and the stories are usually spread by people who mean well, but the simple fact is that nearly every popular Christmas custom can be traced back to pagan roots and the 'Oh, it's really symbolic of Jesus' blather basically started as a rationalization of what people were doing anyway because their ancestors had been doing it at that time of year for centuries.

So feel free to assign whatever significance to the red lights you feel like. You certainly won't be any more wrong than whatever the "official" version of the story says, and hey: they're your red lights. They symbolize whatever you want them to.

The blood of Jesus, shed on the cross? Why not? The stain of original sin? Yeah, that one sort of makes sense too.
