Ionic bonds are mainly the weakest bond; it is weaker than hydrogen bonds. Aside from that, hydrogen molecules are cohesive.

Salt is NaCl, which is an ionic bond. It easily dissolves in water. Plus, if there are too much ions in the water, electricity could channel in it. Although, water is an electricity conductor by itself.

The hydrogen bonds in water account for its unique properties: heating capacity, density as a solid, adhesion, and cohesion.

  • Heating capacity: Due to the strength of the hydrogen bonds, water is able to retain its temperature better than most substances. This is why it seems to take forever to boil a pot of water, and why fish in a lake do not die in the winter, because only the surface of the water freezes.
  • Density: For most substances, the solid is more dense than the liquid. This is not true for water. As water cools, the hydrogen bonds between each water molecule and expand to create a hexagonal crystal lattice. This is why ice cubes float in water.
  • Adhesion and Cohesion: Because of the polarity of the water created by the hydrogen bonds, water has the properties of adhesion when the bond with another surface is stronger than the bond to water, and cohesion (surface tension), when the hydrogen bond with another water molecule is stronger. This is why water can stick to a glass, and why water striders can "walk" on water.
