When you say "if you have schizoid" it may depend what you mean? Do you think you yourself might be schizoid? Or have you encountered some other person who you want to help because you think he is schizoid. I suggest You really first need to check yourself or himself out to find out if it really is a schizoid personality not some other disorder like schizophrenia.

So can I first analyse the behaviour patterns of being schizoid. A schizoid person is usually a male (women schizoids are extremely rare). He is essentially a loner, that is he seems to habitually prefer his own company and appears to have no desire to socialize with others except when essential, but some schizoids really do feel lonely but just lack the will and ability to communicate with others so just carry on being loners throughout life.

Either way, he is likely to be considered weird by others he encounter primarily because he prefers solitary activities in all aspects of his life including working all by himself, such as getting a job as lone worker on night shifts as a security guard. He also quite possibly shows no desire to have sex with anybody else ever in his life, yet may well privately enjoy sex by himself, that probably involving his secret fantasy world, although probably only he himself will know that as he never discusses his private thoughts and fantasies with anybody else.

He may also be considered weird because he rarely expresses strong emotion and appears to have indifference to social conventions. So the question to ask yourself is are you or the person you want to help regarded by other people like that?

If so OK, you or he may well have a schizoid personality. But the issue may then be does he or you want to change and be more like others? Because most schizoids like them-self the way they are so have no desire to be treated and that means attempting to change him without his support will very probably fail. The schizoid personality needs to have the personal desire to change. Some schizoids only acquire a desire to change in middle age or old age.

So basically the next big issue is, If you or he do want to change then first step is see a doctor (physician if in USA or G.P. if in UK or whatever) and ask him or her to refer you to a mental health specialist in your country, such as a Psychologist or Psychiatrist. So what happens then?

Treatment by psychotherapy can work well. That can be psychodynamic therapy or group therapy or else cognitive-behavioral therapy which has proved particularly effective in helping schizoids adjust their thinking and behaviour patterns. Alternatively hypno-therapy works well with some schizoids but not others, this again depending on whether person really wants to change.

Do not consider use of drugs on your own. Medication such as anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, and anti-anxiety drugs may or may not be part of prescribed treatment; but any such medications is normally only prescribed in treatment in combination with some form of psychotherapy. Drugs are not successful as a sole treatment method.

What is the difference between schizoid and schizotypal?

There are many similarities between the Schizotypal and Schizoid personalities. Most notable of the similarities is the inability to initiate or maintain relationships (both friendly and romantic). The difference between the two seems to be that those labeled as Schizotypal avoid social interaction because of a deep-seated fear of people. The Schizoid individual simply feels no desire to form relationships, because they quite literally see no point in sharing their time with others. An important distinction is that people with Schizoid Personality don't typically experience the perceptual distortions, paranoia or illusions typical of Schizotypal Personality or the psychotic episodes of Schizophrenia.
