How do you feed a week old puppy?

At six weeks old, the puppy should be well ready for regular food, they love good quality canned food, and dry dog food intended for puppys (smaller pieces) is also good. I normally start feeding them at three weeks so that when "mom" is tired of them, they are used to having regular food. Even at three weeks they take quite rapidly to canned food, and dry food a little later. If you plan to use mainly dry food, I suggest giving them less and less canned food slowly and make sure there is always plenty of dry food available, out for them, and they will eat it when they get hungry. By ten weeks, they should be entirely on dry if that is what you want to feed. I have to admit that I am a 'sucker" for my dogs, and always give them a mixture of canned and dry. I make the canned feeding an"event" by handing each of them the bites on a fork as I call their names (this helps to teach them their name), and then leave dry food for them to have as they are ready for it. They won't overeat on dry, but will eat just about all the canned they can get hold of, so be careful with that.

Try one forth of a cup to start with for a small puppy, a little more if he/she is a big puppy, just to see how much he/she will eat, then go from there, you will learn how much your puppy likes and not him/her sick. All puppies are different so just kind of play around with the amounts. If all the food is not ate at the time, pick up the rest so puppy won`t make it`s self sick.

Purchase a puppy nursing bottle from a pet supply store, or use a human baby bottle. Also pick up puppy milk replacer (there are several brands on the market). Warm the milk replacer to room temperature and test the temperature by placing a couple of drops on the inside of your wrist - if you can't feel the drops, the milk is the correct temperature. Make sure the puppy is warm and comfortable and offer the bottle every 2-3 hours. Don't force the bottle on the puppy or try to squeeze the milk into the puppy - it needs to suck the milk out on its own. After feeding, make sure you massage the belly to get the puppy to defecate and urinate - its intestines are developed enough yet to do this on its own.

Ideally, of course, your puppy would still be nursing on the mother at this age so you wouldn't need to feed it anything at all - just feed the mother high quality puppy chow and she'll take care of the rest.

If the puppies have been nursing up to now, you can wean them gradually onto any good quality puppy food by first offering it softened in warm water or a puppy milk replacer. You can allow them to continue to nurse during the this process. Gradually over about 7 to 10 days you can reduce the liquid portion until they are eating the food dry. At that point they can discontinue nursing. If the bitch is not available, you may need to bottle feed them with a milk replacer during the weaning process. It is a good idea to weigh the puppies daily to be sure they are gaining and not losing weight. The brand of puppy food you use is largely personal preference, as long as it is a reputable source.

I fed my 8 week puppy 3/4 cup of regular kibble with warm water, to make it easier for them to eat it.
