How much time and energy are needed for good study habits?

When you first begin to change your study habits, it seems to take longer -- this is just because you're used to your old habits, though. Good study habits actually take less time once you get used to them, because you don't waste all that time studying the wrong way (the sort of studying where you end up having to go over and over and over something, and still miss that question). Energy-wise, good studying takes more concentration and focus, but is actually less tiring than bad study habits. You're focused in on your work with good habits, and it takes less time and energy overall.

What are the effects of good study habits?

Studying efficiently and being focused with no distractions are good study habits which minimize studying time by a lot, and increase comprehension. You learn a LOT more that way. Students with poor study habits don't know how to learn effectively.

Should children get an allowance according to grades or behavior?

The behavior of children is effected by positive or negative reinforcement. Punishments are negative reinforcement, rewards are positive reinforcement. Grades are a result of behavior. The best behavior modifiers are encouraged by giving positive reinforement for doing well and only negative if doing exceedingly bad. I would suggest reinforcing the behavior of doing all their homework, studying for tests, and having good study habits. It is more work as a parent to do these things, but raising a child that has good study habits is much more benefit in the long run than simply having good grades. The professional world might hire you for good grades but only promotes the individuals that have good work habits. And good study habits will result in the best possible grades for your child as a side effect.
