Its a good question and a bit of a controversial one as well. Imagine this scenario:
There are 2 schools. The first is a school that is giving out high grades to nearly all students. 30 percent of the student body have a 4.0 gpas. At the second school, a B is considered a high grade and there are very, very few students with an A average.
5 applicants from the first school, all with 4.0's apply, and 5 from the second school, with 3.8s, apply to a 5 student university. Would it be fair to take all 5 from the 4.0 school and none from the other? No, of course not. SAT scores and ACT scores help colleges in the process of admissions.
It is unfortunate that some students are geared towards tests and others are not. But this is a reflection upon the education system as a whole (if you struggle with tests, you will probably struggle in a difficult university). Don't blame the tests, blame the education system that makes them necessary.
If you mean to ask, why is it important for an individual person (e.g. yourself) to take them...
I dont necessarily think it is. If going to a 4-year university and getting a wallstreet job is important to you...Then grin and bear it my friend. Take the tests. But there are so many other ways to be successful in life (and I dont necessarily mean financially), and you would probably be happier anyway. Just keep your options open.
The SAT and ACT include a balance of questions, some particularly hard. You should take a practice test, available from your high school guidance office, to determine if these tests are challenging for you.
