you don't really torque them, you tighten little by little as you shake them up and down until they are snug, the tighten just a little more, too much will leave you with bent pushrods

AnswerActuall, the 87 uses hydrolic roller lifters, so the procedure would be to just tighten them down. I believe that the torque spec is something like 24 ft. lbs. (you should look it up).

Dont just tighten them down until the pushrods appear to be tight (as described in the first answer) or the nuts may back out and you will have big problems. Unless you have changed pushrod length or installed aftermarket rocker arms. If this is the case, you may need to purchase shims to maintain the proper rocker arm geometry.

Is there a proper way to put in pushrods for a Volkswagen engine 1600cc?

Well...kind of. There's a recess in the cam follower (which is way inside your engine) that accepts one end of the pushrod and a recess in the rocker that accepts the other end. Pushrods are the same at both ends. So... Start by rolling the pushrod on a flat surface. If it won't roll, it's bent and you need a new one. Stick the pushrods into their holes, then install and torque the rocker arm. Adjust your valves, install the valve cover and you're done.

What happens if rocker arms are not torque down to specs?

First of all, They DO NOT TORQUE. If I told you how to adjust the valves you would just get confused. You need to get a chiltons book and follow the directions on how to adjust the valves. If you did torque are adjust / tighten the valves all the way down then you have probley bent a push rod are a valve. Rocker arms that are too loose will clatter, and you won't have all the lift of the cam opening up the valve. Rocker arms that are too tight can bend pushrods, hold the valves open, and bottom out the springs.

On a 2002 buick century 3100 Do you have to take the push rods out to change the lower intake manifold gaskets and if so what is the torque spec for the rocker arms?

You will have to remove the pushrods, and there are two ways to do it. Lisle makes a pushrod tool specifically for 3100 and 3400 gm engines which tips the rockers far enough away from the pushrods so they can be removed, or you can just loosen the rockers up enough until the pushrods are able to come out. I would recommend buying the tool and removing the pushrods that way though because otherwise you will have to loosen and retighten the rocker bolts which have a few different torque specifications. They have revised their specs on rocker torque i think a couple of times, and i have seen a lot of rockers which people have pulled the threads right out when tightening the rockers too hard so if you do take the rockers off, i would take a 3/8 ratchet and get it good and snug. Do not reef on it just get it good and snug. The tool is neat though because it acts as a lever and pulls on the bottom side of the rocker on one side and pushes on the top of the other side and you can pull the pushrods right out and then you don't have to worry about anything. The tool is inexpensive too, maybe 15-20 dollars i think. I hope this information helps You will have to remove the pushrods, and there are two ways to do it.
