His story is a long and complex one. Please be ready for a large amount of writing!

I shall start from the beginning of his story, rather than the beginning of Harry Potter.

Albus lived in a family with two magical parents, a younger brother (Aberforth) and a younger still sister (Ariana). One day, his sister was playing in the garden and, being younger than hogwarts age, could not control her magic. Unfortunately some muggle children saw her doing so and attempted to force her to produce more magic. The strain of it drove her magic inwards (supposably) and her father was sent to Azkaban for assaulting the muggle boys who did his to her.

Kendra Dumbledore, Albus, Aberforth and Ariana's mother, moved the family to the reknowned wizarding village of Godrics Hollow to avoid scandal - the family had lost its good name once the children's father had been locked away. Albus was the oldest and attended Hogwarts first, making friends with the outcast Elphias Doge. The two were good friends. Albus was an ambitious boy, always winning prizes and getting perfect grades. He was a good student.

Meanwhile, Aberforth and his sister Ariana stayed home with their mother, as neither were of Hogwarts age. Aberforth was said to be the only one who could control his sister, who would have dreadful tantrums and was almost demented due to her "condition" of the magic being driven inwards. Her exercise was a daily walk around the garden. Another reason for the family's relocation was to cover up the fact that Ariana was, essentially, a Squib.

Aberforth then attended Hogwarts too, always, however, in the shadow of his brother. He wasn't home to look after his sister.

At the end of school, Albus and Elphias Doge planned on taking the traditional World Tour before going their separate ways to their careers. However, on the night before their departure, Kendra Dumbledore died and so, Albus stayed behind in order to look after his school-aged brother and care-needing sister. His brother, Aberforth, offered to leave school and look after her, to allow his brother the trip the two friends had been planning, and also because he could better control Ariana. Albus, however, was adament that his brother should complete his schooling and so, sent Aberforth back to Hogwarts at the start of the school year and stayed home to tend to Ariana. He did a good job with her, however was lonely without a friend whom he could talk to or see - any children close to his age were at Hogwarts, or if not, were taking the World Tour or beginning their careers.

He struck luck, though. Old Bathilda Bagshot's nephew moved to the village to stay with his aunt for a time. The two were of the same age, and became close companions to each other. It was around this time that Ariana took the back seat. Grindelwald, Bathilda's nephew, introduced the idea of the "Greater Good" to Dumbledore - power over Muggles, immense power. He also introduced the "Deathly Hallows" to Albus - if you do not know, they are the Elder Wand (unbeatable), the Invisibilty Cloak (cannot be cursed off) and the Resurrection Stone (brings back images of people from the dead). The two boys planned and schemed together for months on end, to find the Deathly Hallows and become Masters of Death.

Aberforth now returns home for the school holidays. Finding out about his brother's plans, he asks what Albus and Grindelwald plan to do with Ariana; she could not be left alone at home and Albus would not allow his brother to leave school. The two suggest taking Ariana with them but Aberforth objects - it cannot be done, it would slow the two down and she could not get the care and attention she required. Getting angry, Grindelwald accuses Aberforth of being a "meddling schoolboy" (or something along those lines) and a duel begins, first between Grindelwald and Aberforth. The former uses the Cruciatus Curse upon Albus' brother, and Albus steps in to defend his brother. Scared and upset, Ariana may have attempted to help but didn't know what she was doing. She lay dead on the floor, none of the boys knowing who killed her.

Grindelwald runs away, having a bad track record. The two brothers bury their sister and engage in a coffin-side brawl, ending in Aberforth's broken nose.

Later on, Grindelwald finds the Elder Wand. Albus wins it off him.

Since then, Albus became a teacher and then headmaster at Hogwarts, turning down many offers for him to become Minister for Magic. He also informs Tom Riddle of his acceptance to Hogwarts.

50-odd years after Tom Riddle comes to Hogwarts, Dumbledore finds out about the Horcruxes that Voldemort made. He puts the ring on his finger and his hand gets cursed. He tells Snape, who informs him that he has just one year of life left, if that. Dumbledore is adament that Snape should have the Elder Wand, and instructs Snape to kill him when the time is right.

Meanwhile, Albus takes Harry to get the locket. When he drinks the potion, he sees the memories of the duel between himself, his brother and Grindelwald, and the death of his sister. He returns to Hogwarts in a fragile condition where Snape then kills him.

This is his story.

Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

He is a highly intelligent and powerful wizard who ran the resistance against Lord Voldemort. When Harry's parents were killed and Voldemort was destroyed, Dumbledore arranged for Harry to be brought to the Dursleys - his only remaining relatives.

Dumbledore is also friends with Nicolas Flamel, the owner of the Philosopher's Stone. When the Stone was being threatened by Voldemort, Dumbledore hid the Stone at Hogwarts through a series of challenges.

Harry and Dumbledore build a very close relationship and he acts as a mentor.

Albus Dumbledore was the headmaster of Hogwarts from 1956 until his death in 1997.

He was temporarily removed from this position in 1993 after several attacks on students by a Basilisk (although it was then unknown what caused them) and again in 1996 when he was thought to be plotting against the Ministry of Magic and creating an Army to fight them (when in actual fact Harry and several students were practising defensive spells).
