I love puzzles like this and did some research on this one. I can only find three hints on this one, as: That some parachutist call it the "Earth Gravity Alliance" although the "A" is sometimes changed to other terms; and that its use with someone deceased normally refers to the failure of a chute. So it maybe that the person there is, or was, a parachutist with a sense of humor; or friends that had a sense of humor. Another joking term is "Extraneous and Gratuitous Acronym" which would seem to be another sense of humor line. One other note is that it is a short version for a US Marine symbol - Eagle, Globe, Anchor; and if misused or confusion on a tombstone ordering form it could be that it was intended to be the Marine symbol and was instead made part of the inscription.
