it stands for what you see is what you get. 'What you see is what you get' describes a computer's display on the monitor. It means that a text appears in the font that it will be printed in and it will look the same on screen as on paper. Before that was invented, the screen would show a text but not how it would appear in print. Apple was first to achieve this improvement.

What You See Is What You Get - In the early days of computers, the ability of the screen to show graphics was much more limited then it is now. That meant that colors and sizes on the CRT didn't always match what the printer was going to print out. When things started to improve, WYSIWYG was a big and exciting ability! Now we pretty much expect that what we see on the screen is what is going to get printed out.
What You See Is What You Get (this is exactly what it stands for, in simple terms you see what your website will look like through the programs GUI.)

Rather than writing code yourself to produce the user interface, a WYSIWYG editor presents you with toolboxes that contain the various elements you might want to add to a page or program. In HTML, these elements are things like text boxes and divs. Most WYSIWYGs also allow you to adjust properties of the element through a friendly interface, so you can set various attributes without going into the code.

WYSIWYGs make UI programming easier. But they're not always the best choice. Sometimes, a WYSIWYG will create code that a human being wouldn't have. In HTML, often, they'll insert unnecessary tags. A true WYSIWYG editor will also give an interface for directly manipulating the code.

The most popular WYSIWYG editor that springs to mind is Adobe's Dreamweaver (used to produce web pages.)

WYSIWYG stands for What You See Is What You Get. For most modern applications, like Microsoft Word, what you see on the screen is what you will see when the document is printed. In older applications, the way things appeared on screen were not as they appeared on paper. For example, text that was bolded had symbols around them, similar to HTML tags, rather than actually appearing bolded.
