The "OU" on food packaging (the letter U inside a circle) is the kosher symbol of the Orthodox Union. It is one of the most popular kosher symbols in the United States. Many Orthodox Jews who only eat kosher food will only buy products with this symbol.

Called O (oh)-U, this is a hechsher. A hechsher is a symbol associated with an organization that monitors commercial food production to confirm that the rules of kashrut are being followed. OU belongs to the Orthodox Union which is an American organization.

Throughout the world, commercial food processors who wish to sell their food as kosher must get certification from a recognised organistion that the food is in fact kosher. The food manufacturers print a symbol called a 'hechsher' on the food packaging to specify which organisation supervises their production.

The hechsher 'OU' belongs to the Orthodox Union which is based in the United States.

When there is a D next to the OU symbol, it means that the food item contains dairy and/or dairy by-products.

The (U)d means that the food is certified kosher by the Union of Orthodoxy and is certified as being dairy (which means that it cannot be mixed with anything certified as meat).
